A dental crown is made from porcelain, and it is essential a cap in the space of a tooth that is placed directly over the top of the tooth. Crowns are used to improve the appearance, strength and functionality of a tooth. They cover the entire part of the tooth that is visible above the gum line. In addition to improving the appearance and functionality of a tooth, crowns may be used for numerous other purposes. They can be used to attach bridges, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse or cover an existing filling that is at risk for coming loose or getting dislodged.

What is the Procedure for Crowns?

Before a crown can be put in place, your tooth must be slightly reduced in size. Your dentist will perform a cast of the existing tooth, and an impression is made. This impression is sent off to a lab where a custom-fitted crown is manufactured. While you are waiting on your permanent crown, a temporary one may be applied. Once your permanent crown arrives, it is cemented in place.

How Do I Take Care of My Crowns?

With proper care, a good crown can last for several years. One of the most important steps in caring for your crowns is frequently flossing around them. This prevents excess plaque buildup and gets rid of debris. It is also important to avoid certain behaviors like clenching your jaw, biting your nails, using your teeth to open packages or grinding your teeth as they significantly shorten the lifespan of crowns. Eating things like raw vegetables, ice or hard candy can damage crowns or compromise their adhesion. You should also avoid sticky and chewy foods like gum and caramel because they could dislodge your crown.
